Factory Network Infrastructure

Network infrastructure for factories and manufacturing sites

A factory network has to cope with conditions an office network never sees: large steel buildings, machinery, dust and heat, long cable runs, and equipment that can't simply be restarted when something goes wrong.

ETCON plans and implements network infrastructure for manufacturing and industrial sites, from site surveys and design through to installation, documentation and ongoing support, so your production, warehouse and office systems stay connected.

Sound familiar?

Signs it's time to act

  • Wi-Fi dead spots on the production floor or in the warehouse
  • Scanners, tablets and machines dropping off the network
  • Office computers and production equipment sharing one flat network
  • Undocumented cabling and switches added over many years
  • A network that can't keep up with new equipment, cameras or sensors
  • No clear plan for what happens if the network or internet link fails

What changes

How we help

  • Coverage where the work happens

Wired and wireless networks designed around your floor plan, building materials and equipment, not guesswork.

  • Production and office kept apart

Segmentation separates production systems from everyday office traffic, reducing risk and keeping critical equipment stable.

  • Documented and supportable

A clear record of your network, so changes, troubleshooting and expansion are faster and safer.

Why factory networks are different

Manufacturing sites are hard environments for networks. Steel structures, racking and stored stock block and reflect wireless signals. Motors, welders and variable-speed drives create electrical noise. Distances between buildings often exceed what standard copper cabling supports, which is where fibre comes in.

On top of that, production equipment often runs for years without changes, and some of it can't be easily updated or restarted. A network that suits an office can struggle badly on a factory floor.

  • Wireless coverage planned from a site survey, not a floor plan alone
  • Access points and enclosures suited to dust, heat and height
  • Fibre backbones between buildings and over long runs
  • Cabling routes that avoid sources of interference

Separating production (OT) and office (IT) networks

Many factories have grown a single, flat network where office computers, production machines, cameras and visitor devices can all reach each other. That makes problems harder to contain: a virus on an office laptop, or a misbehaving device, can affect equipment on the production line.

We design networks in zones, separating production systems from office systems and controlling exactly what can pass between them. Equipment vendors who need remote access are given a controlled, auditable way in, rather than an always-open connection.

  • Separate network zones for production, office, guests and cameras
  • Firewall rules that allow only the traffic each zone needs
  • Controlled remote access for equipment vendors
  • Visibility of what's connected to your network

Ready for sensors, cameras and smart manufacturing

Smart manufacturing (sometimes called Industry 4.0) depends on the network: sensors, connected machines, CCTV and production data all need reliable connectivity. Planning for that capacity now avoids expensive rework later.

We size switching, Power over Ethernet and backbone capacity for what you're adding next, and make sure production data can reach the systems that need it, securely.

Keeping the site running

When production depends on the network, resilience matters. We look at single points of failure and plan practical options to reduce them, matched to what downtime would cost your business.

  • Backup internet connections with automatic failover
  • Uninterruptible power for critical network equipment
  • Backed-up switch and firewall configurations
  • Documented steps for recovering from common failures

What we deliver

What's included

  • Site survey and network assessment, including Wi-Fi coverage
  • Network design for production, warehouse and office areas
  • Industrial and warehouse Wi-Fi design and implementation
  • Segmentation between office (IT) and production (OT) networks
  • Switching, routing and firewall configuration
  • Fibre and copper cabling, installed by appropriately registered contractors
  • Internet and site-to-site connectivity, including failover options
  • Network documentation, diagrams and handover
  • Ongoing support under an agreed support arrangement

How engagements work

Factory network projects start with a site survey and assessment. We then provide a scoped design and quotation, with hardware, materials and installation quoted separately so costs are clear.

Where we deliver

Design, configuration and support can be delivered remotely. Site surveys and installation need someone onsite: availability depends on your location, and cabling is carried out by appropriately registered contractors. We'll confirm what's possible during the discovery call.

FAQs

Common questions

Can you fix Wi-Fi coverage in a factory or warehouse?

Yes. We start with a site survey to measure coverage and interference, then design access point placement and equipment suited to your environment. After installation, coverage is checked again to confirm it meets the design.

Why should production and office networks be separated?

Separation limits how far a problem can spread. If an office computer is infected or a device misbehaves, production equipment on a separate, controlled network is far less likely to be affected. It also makes troubleshooting simpler.

Can you work with our machinery and equipment vendors?

Yes. We work with equipment suppliers to understand their network requirements, and set up controlled remote access when they need to support their machines.

Do you install the cabling?

Structured cabling and physical installation are carried out by appropriately registered contractors, coordinated by ETCON as part of your project.

Can the work be done without stopping production?

We plan network changes in stages and schedule disruptive work around your production, such as during planned shutdowns or between shifts, to keep disruption to a minimum.

Do you provide 24/7 network or security monitoring?

Ongoing support is provided under an agreed support arrangement. We don't operate a 24/7 security operations centre; where you need one, we can help you define the requirements and engage a specialist provider.
